Ústí nad Labem

Let´s be honest. Not many people would go to the junction of Labe and Bílina just to enjoy the fresh air, nice monuments and to do some sports. Ústí nad Labem, in which Střekov is situated, is not one of the most popular tourist destinations. It is because of industrial zones nearby and because of socialistic architecture of the city. But that´s a pity. Ústí is surrounded by picturesque hills of České středohoří, which are full of paths and hiking trails, that are suitable for hiking as well as cycling. The most important is the international Labe cyclo path. In Telnice you can ski, in Tisá you can do a rock-climbing. Waters of Labe are attractive to do yachting, rowing or water-skiing.

The greatest touristic attraction of Ústí nad Labem is in its surroundings. Conical hills of the extinct vulcanos are covered by dense forests and decorated by ruins of some mysterious castles. It is really a fairyland. But the city itself has something to offer. There are sporting facilities, pools, cinemas, nice restaurants and caffés as well as historic monuments. Just ignore few cubic buildings that really evoke postcards from the times before the Velvet revolution and Ústí will become an ideal place for your summer holiday.

A watchtower with Větruše restaurant

Although the castle Větruše was built in the late 19th Century, many fables are connected with it, that are even older than the castle itself. A mischievous knight lived on Větruše. A catapult had been brought to him somewhere from Hungary, people called the catapult „Hell machine“. He shot everything that crossed his mind on poor people. (even corpses of dead animals) It did not take long for people to revenge. They chained him, sat him on the catapult and shot him straight to Labe. Větruše has been reconstructed in 2001. There is a nice restaurant and from 30 metres high watchtower you can see a nice piece of České středohoří mountains. There is a picturesque view on Střekov from the watchtower.

Church of Saint Mary

A tower of the most magnificient church in Ústí is being dislocated for two metres from its own axis thanks to the bombing in 1945. Nowadays is the second most leaning tower after the Tower of Pisa. In its interior it hids one of the greatest neo-gothic bells in Bohemia, that had been brought here from Netherlands in 1506. Church of Saint Mary was founded in the late 12th Century. Its core is from the era of late Gothic and in the late 19th Century architect Josef Rocker rebuilded it in the neo-Gothic style. An altar „na muří nožce“ by Ing. akad. arch M. Gabriel, that is made from glass, strongly contrasts with the wing altar from the late 15th century.
